Situation Opera is proud to present our first performance, in cooperation with The Bloomsbury Association. This concert will be held on Friday 16th May 2008 and will include three of Mozart's most popular works. We are delighted to be performing in St George's Bloomsbury, the youngest of London's Hawksmoor Churches.
Irish pianist Clíodna Shanahan will perform Piano Concerto No.9 K271 - "Jeunehomme", conducted by Nick Newland. This passionate work will be played on St George's Bechstein piano with the Orchestra of Situation Opera. Following the concerto, Dutch Soprano Iris Korfker will sing the beautiful Exsultate, Jubilate K165 - with the alternative text Mozart wrote for performances after Easter.
The second half of the concert will hear Mozart's final work, the Requiem Mass in D minor K626. Left unfinished at the time of his death, the work was later finished by Mozart's colleague Franz Xaver Süßmayr at the request of his widow. For many years this completion has been accepted as the most relevant, though other composers have since made efforts at completion. Much speculation remains about the possibility of a missing "Amen" section after the unfinished Lacrimosa. Taking existing sketches for an Amen in D minor, Situation Opera founders Tom Simpson and Nick Newland have recreated a performable Amen for the Requiem. This is not an attempt at completion, but rather an offering in the spirit of performing the work in its fullest form.
The Requiem will be conducted by Marion Wood, who will be joined by soloists Georgia Knower (soprano), Melanie Sanders (mezzo-soprano), Graham Neal (tenor) and Georgios Papaefstratiou (bass).
