Jonathan Hill studied Tenor and Alto Trombone and Classical Guitar at the Royal College of Music for four years, where he gained his Bachelor of Music Degree with Honours. Jonathan studied with classical trombonists Lindsay Shilling, Bryon Fulcher and Graham Lee and has also played in master class for Christian Lindberg and Jorgen Van Rijen amongst others. Through his own perseverance he also managed to obtain some rare tuition from internationally acclaimed jazz trombonists Mark Nightingale and Andy Wood.
Whilst at the Royal College of Music, Jonathan played in all the Orchestra’s and in the Opera Pit. Highlights of his performance experience were to play under the direction of Sir Charles Mackerras and Bernard Haitink in Orchestra and alongside members of London Brass in various chamber brass groups.
After finishing his studies in July 2007 Jonathan began a freelance career encompassing a wide variety of music. Working with Orchestras such as the English Chamber Orchestra, West London Sinfonia and making regular appearances with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), including performance at the BAFTA’s and also on tour with Buddy Greco. Other jazz work includes the London Jazz Collective, Big Band Metheny, and Terry Drummond’s little big band.
Jonathan now plays trombone in the Central Band of the Royal Air Force where he continues to enjoy a wide variety of music whilst still persuing freelance work.
