Born in Tasmania in 1985, Katerina Mitchell began the violin at a very early age, first learning from her mother and then at the age of nine from Barbara Jane Gilby. She made her first public appearance at the age of six and her solo debut at the age of eleven with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra for a special Christmas concert, which was broadcast nationally on ABC television, and was subsequently invited back to perform again with the orchestra.
In 1998 Katerina was awarded a scholarship to study chamber music at the Australian National Academy of Music, in 2001 participated in music courses in Australia, Switzerland and England and in 2003 was accepted to the Royal College of Music, graduating in 2007 with First Class Honours. She is continuing at the RCM on a Masters course studying with Berent Korfker. Her studies are supported by the Australian Young Musicians Foundation and the Sir John Ackroyd Award
Katerina has performed as a soloist, recitalist, and orchestral player in countries including Australia, England, Switzerland, Germany and Italy working with conductors such as Sir Charles Mackerras, Bernard Haitink, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Sir Roger Norrington, Andrew Litton and Richard Mills. She has also recorded for ABC Classic FM.
